Math Night

Second Grade Math Night was a great success! We were able to share with parents the addition and subtraction strategies that we teach our students. We would like to thank Mrs. Shall and Mrs. Sambito for their work in helping us prepare for this very important event. Please view this link for details regarding the shift in thinking about mathematics instruction and further details about the event. Character Counts! September Character Traits-Respect

      Florida Statutes require that all schools in the state provide a character development program in all grades, K-12. Duval County Public Schools participates in a program that makes an effort to teach students how to take responsibility for their actions and to treat others with respect. We believe in this idea and participate in lessons that promote quality character traits. 

     In the month of September, the focus was on respect. The students in our class voted for the student who has demonstrated traits that show respect. The vote was a tie. We would like to congratulate our two students for being selected by their classmates for consistently demonstrating respect. 

Dessert First!

Today, we had the opportunity to have lunch with five of our students as part of a reward program for cooperation and teamwork. We enjoyed having lunch together and really spending some time getting to know our students. We plan to continue this incentive program to promote teamwork but mostly to give us the opportunity to get to know our students better in a smaller, quieter setting. The most important lesson that the kids learned today is that whenever you get a chance to have dessert, eat dessert first. We did just that!

Reflex Math

Reflex Math is a fun and quick way to practice basic math facts to gain fluency and accuracy. All of the students received their individual username and passcode last week. Since starting the program for the new school year, our students have already solved 7,359. Wow!  

What questions do scientists ask?

On Friday, we learned that scientists are people who study the world around them. Scientists use inquiry to learn. Inquiry means asking questions and looking for answers. 

Our class was shown a picture of a rover exploring the surface of Mars. We decided to brainstorm a list of questions we have about Mars. Wow! Did you know that our class is full of scientists?

Lions, Tigers, and Bears...Oh my!

Wow!! We are "WILD" about our second grade class! 

Today, our adventurers had their very own "wow" experience. We put on our safari hats, took out our binoculars, and made sure to bring our passports along on our journey. Our first two stops were in Africa and Europe. Sensory Safari provided our students with a very unique experience. We were able to feel the animals and learn about their habitats.
